Once, the concept of regenerating human cells on a dish might have seemed like pure fiction. Today, however, this is the reality we are shaping at the regenerative bioelectronic technologies laboratory. Our mission is to bridge the gap between biology and electronics, to put forward material and devices that heal human cells, tissues, and organs. Our focus lies particularly on neuron and cardiac cell regeneration.
Our research is rooted in the innovative field of organic electronic materials and devices. These are substances that echo the components of our own bodies, yet possess the remarkable ability to conduct electrical and biological currents, simultaneously. This dual nature allows them to sense complex biological processes and translate them into electrical signals. By harnessing the capabilities of these electronic materials, we tap into the innate power of stem cells and regenerative processes, in ways previously unimaginable.
We design and fabricate electrically active gels, soft electrodes, and light sensitive devices, that act with on cells, and boost they are efforts of repairing other dysfunctional cells and tissue in our bodies.
Our goal is ambitious yet clear: to pioneer new treatments that could revolutionize the way we approach major diseases, including cardiac dysfunction, spinal cord injuries, and brain disorders.
The Regenerative Bioelectronic Technologies Laboratory stands at the forefront of a new frontier at the borders between medicine, electrical engineering and materials science. Our commitment to the advancement of human health propels us forward, as we continue to explore and expand the boundaries of what is possible.
We are a diverse team of engineers, chemists, and biologists, embedded within the section of bioelectronics at the Department of Microelectronics at TU Delft. Find out more information about our activities by visiting our webpage or contact Dr. Achilleas Savva by email at a.savva@tudelft.nl.
Let’s work together on technologies that improve healthcare.
