The BioElectronics Section – Department of Microelectronics

The mission of the Section Bioelectronics is to design, invent, and engineer electronic technology for the monitoring, diagnosis and treatment of major diseases. Brain disorders, cardiac and muscular dysfunctions are targeted among others.

To this end, we design and fabricate active biomedical microsystems employing:

  • Neuromodulation and -stimulation
  • Transcutaneous and intra-body wireless communication
  • Wireless power transfer and management
  • Implantable electronics
  • Microsystem integration
  • CMOS multi-electrode arrays
  • Wireless CMOS biosensors and sensor technology

We apply this technology on cardiac pacemakers, cochlear implants, spinal cord implants, organs on chip, neurostimulators and other devices that deliver bioelectronic medicine. Recently, together with our clinical partners, we have develop bioelectronic systems that train the brain to 'turn off' tinnitus. We developed a portable box, full of electronics that emits signals, allowing ringing and buzzing brains to learn to be silent again.
