Guy Shpak is a neuroscientist interested in the physiological mechanisms related to mind-body practices, and specifically martial arts, in the context of physical and mental well-being.
During his Master’s and PhD, Guy studied how social (pheromonal) information is coded in the olfactory system. Using electrophysiological and molecular tools, this work uncovered molecular mechanisms related to persistent electrical activity patterns in the main and accessory olfactory system’s mitral cells.
As a postdoctoral researcher at the Erasmus Medical Center Psychiatry Department in Rotterdam, Guy investigated the neurophysiological properties of human iPSC-derived neurons in 2D and 3D neuronal cultures, as a model for psychiatric disorders. This work improved and developed single-cell electrophysiological recording protocols used in several research lines, including familial schizophrenia study, drug discovery assays, and more.
Later, he expanded his teaching experience as a senior lecturer and course coordinator at the Erasmus University College Life-Sciences department. He developed, delivered, and coordinated academic courses, including neuroscience and pre-med courses, as well as mentored students in various projects, from basic research to final (capstone) projects.
Currently, as the founder of the Mind-Set Framework, Guy designs and delivers science-based programs promoting mental well-being for different organizations and coordinates research programs bridging academia, healthcare, and private stakeholders. His main focus is promoting mental well-being using martial arts interventions in a science-informed approach.
