Before he came to the Netherlands, Dr. Yannick Taverne completed a master in physical therapy and rehabilitation sciences in Belgium which sparked his interest for cardiac functionality resulting in a sub-specialization in functional cardiac morphology and developmental biology. Afterwards, he obtained his medical degree and did an additional master as a clinical epidemiologist. After his medical degree, he continued his training, as a scientist resulting in his PhD, and as a resident in cardiothoracic surgery. He is currently working as an associate professor and congenital cardiothoracic surgeon at the Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
After his PhD, he created the first Translational cardiothoracic surgery research lab, which encompasses an innovative cardiac biomimetic research platform piloting breakthroughs in real-time patient specific biofeedback on cardiac biomechanics. The hallmark of this lab is centered around precision medicine where cardiac surgical interventions are combined with simultaneous cellular/tissue modifications that are guided by a direct biofeedback loop on cardiac performance to enhance cardiac function and longevity.
